WHS update for 2024

9 Hole Scores

Beginning in 2024, when a player posts a 9-hole score, the WHS will automatically calculate an 18-hole Score Differential for the round, based on the player’s 9-hole Score Differential and expected Score Differential based on their current Handicap Index®, allowing the 9-hole round to be considered in the player’s Handicap Index calculation right away.

As part of this change, golfers will be required to play and post all 9 holes with a valid 9-hole Course Rating™ and Slope Rating™ instead of the previous minimum of 7 holes.

Rules Tip...

2023 brings in an update to the Rules of Golf

please ensure you are up to date click here

Ready Golf

In Stroke play - You should play "Ready Golf" when it is safe and responsible to do so. You don't have to wait until the farthest away player has played. For example play "Ready Golf":

  • When the farthest away has a difficult shot and is assessing options.
  • When a longer hitter has to wait for a putting green to clear.
  • On the tee, if the player who is to play is delayed.
  • By playing your shot before helping to look for a lost ball

Where possible, you should advise the other players that you are going to play first.

In match play, you and your opponent may agree that one of you will play out of turn.

Handicap system changes starting in 2024 for recording 9 Hole scores

How is the treatment of 9-hole scores changing under the WHS™ in 2024?

Currently, one 9-hole score must be combined with another to create an 18-hole Score Differential™ before it can be counted for handicap purposes.

What are the benefits of this change?

The growing number of golfers who regularly play 9-hole rounds will no longer have to wait for another 9-hole score for their Handicap Index to be updated.

In addition, it provides a better indicator of how a player will normally perform over 18 holes on a given day when compared to combining 9-hole scores from different days and under different playing conditions.

Finally, this new method produces a more consistent and comparable Handicap Index for golfers who post 9-hole scores. For example, under the current method:

Combining two independent 9-hole scores often results in more volatility and is highly dependent on the order in which scores are combined.
It is also common for two good 9-hole scores to be combined that produce an 18-hole Score Differential that is better than any of the player’s 18-hole scores made over 18 consecutive holes. The impact is an artificially low Handicap Index.

How will a golfer’s expected score be determined to create an 18-hole Score Differential?

Once the player’s 9-hole Score Differential has been calculated, it is combined with an expected Score Differential based on the player’s current Handicap Index to create an 18-hole Score Differential.

The expected score is based on the average Score Differential of a player with a given Handicap Index and a normal distribution of scores – so it is not specific to each player.

An expected score can be thought of as a neutral value, meaning that a good 9-hole round (relative to the player’s ability) will result in a good 18-hole Score Differential. An average 9-hole round will result in an average 18-hole Score Differential, etc.

Here is an example of how a 9-hole score is converted into an 18-hole Score Differential:

A player with a Handicap Index of 14.0 posts a 9-hole score of 41. Based on Course Rating™  and Slope Rating™  of the tees played, this results in a 9-hole Score Differential of 7.2. That value is then added to the player's expected 9-hole Score Differential to determine an 18-hole Score Differential of 15.7, which will be entered into the player's scoring record immediately.

When establishing a Handicap Index, how are 9-hole scores treated?

To establish a Handicap Index, a player must play and post a total of 54 holes, which can be made up of 9- and/or 18-hole scores. The use of expected score does not come into play until a golfer plays and posts 54 individual hole scores.

Once the player has posted scores from a total of 54 holes and an expected score can be determined for the player, an 18-hole Score Differential will be calculated for each 9-hole score and displayed within their scoring record. At this time the player will have established their initial Handicap Index.

How will the score-posting procedure change for a 9-hole score?

The procedure for posting a 9-hole score will not change, and the options for posting scores will continue to be through the Golf Canada app.

What a day!  It poured rain overnight and the forecast for game day was not great – thunderstorms!  So much for the forecast.  It turned out to be just beautiful in the morning, then gradually became hotter and muggier as the day wore on.  However, all the players finished their matches dry.  The storms seemed to realize we needed a good golf day.

The Cornwall team, playing on their home course, came in first and will move up into the C Division.  Smiths Falls came in 2nd and will be the host of next year’s D Division Intersectionals.  We, Mississippi, came in third so we will stay in Division D and play in Smiths Falls next year.  The Greensmere team came in 4th and will drop down into the E Division.

September 17 - Ladies Closing

It was a beautiful day for our Ladies Closing Scramble and dinner.  The weather was just right, no rain and very little wind.  Simone Foley and her elves beautifully decorated the dining room with an autumn theme.  The delicious dinner was baked ham, scalloped potatoes, carrots, green beans, fresh buns with butter and apple pie with ice cream.

We had 11 teams of 4 playing a step aside scramble.  The top three winners were:

1st Place: Lynn Kolar, Susan Kolar, Tracey Wilson, Danielle Hopps

September 10th - the Ladies Division held their annual 4 Ball Better Ball sponsored by Stanley Sanitation.  We had a great turn-out with 47 golfers playing in another hot and steamy day. Winners for the day were Lorrie Van Dusen and Cathy Draper. See the results pages for more results

August 30 - Sr. Women’s Intersectionals @ Greensmere

The weather forecast for August 30th was miserable, but the storm held off for a while instead of lasting the whole day.  The first two groups were able to get into the clubhouse moderately damp, however, the rest of the field were soaked.  Fortunately, no lightening, so they played on.  The four clubs playing in the Intersectionals were Greensmere, Mississippi, Rockland, and Brockville.

We finished tied for second place with Greensmere and through the tie-breaker calculation, we placed third.  The 2nd place finishing team hosts the next year, however, Greensmere had already been the host for the past 2 years, so do not have to host again.  That means that we will be the host for the Sr. Women’s Intersectionals next August.

The ladies who won the full 6 points – meaning they were able to win their matches against their 3 playing partners were:

Greensmere – Laurie Cotton and Colleen Haché

Mississippi – Lila James

Brockville – Marsha Lindsay and Teri De Luis

The final standings were:

Brockville – 22 points, and they move up to the C Division

Greensmere – 19 points, and they stay in the D Division

Mississippi – 19 points, and we will host next year

Rockland – 18 points, and they will move down to E Division.

August 27 O'Brien Cup @ Pembroke

The O'Brien Cup team faced some very stiff competition in Pembroke over the weekend and placed fourth at the end of the event.  Mississippi's low gross of the day was Tracey Wilson, and our low net went to Lila James. Congratulations ladies on a fine effort. For individual results please go to the results or team info page.

August 20 & 20 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Weekend

The Ladies Club Championship was held on the weekend of August 20/21.  The weather did not cooperate at all.  Saturday was exceedingly hot and humid while Sunday started off very nice and then turned into rain – torrential at times.  Luckily, no lightening so we were able to get in all 18 holes.

Many thanks to our volunteers who helped us with the scoring – checking the cards and the math, writing the scores hole by hole on the BIG sheets and determining our winners.  Take a bow Dianne Illingworth, Sue Turner, Susan Kolar, and Danielle Dubé-Loach for doing an exceptional job.

On Saturday, we played for skins.  Gift certificates to the Pro Shop can be collected in the Pro Shop

For A Class, winners were Chloe Wilson, Gay Wilson, Lila James, and Tracy Duvall.

For B Class, winners were Suzanne Maheral, Susan Wimperis, Donna Specht, Janet Jones, Caroline Kealey, Joanne Kolar, Carolyn Renwick, and Christine O’Keefe.

Our 50/50 on both days was very successful especially to the winners Sue Turner (Saturday) and Janet Jones (Sunday).  Many thanks to Colleen Seabrook and Marion Linka for running around to everyone to sell the tickets.  Without our 50/50 money, we would not be able to afford prizes for our championship and many other expenses we incur during the year.

July 19 Member Guest

We had a wonderful Birthday Party theme for this year’s Member Guest.  Thirty-five of our members brought 49 guests filling our dining room.  Everyone received a “loot bag” to get their golfing going.  As the teams came in, we munched on chips and salsa plus cheezies (!!).   Balloons graced our tables with very colourful table runners and sparkling bits.  The lunch was a throw-back to birthday parties from our youth with burgers, salads, and of course cake and ice cream.  Many of the carts were decorated – check out our photo gallery.  Every member and guest received a prize, thanks to generous contributions from our local vendors, businesses, and our members.  A picture was taken in front of the club house of all the people who attended, most still wearing their party hats.  It was so much fun, just like a birthday party.

Ladies Closing Scramble

Ladies Closing Scramble and Fall Meeting: We had 56 ladies sign up to play in this year’s closing scramble tournament. As a result of the recent increase in new members to the club, all of the new lady members were invited to participate in this event. It was a great opportunity for all of our current members to meet, golf and socialize with these new members. Following golf, some teams won door prizes and year-end awards were handed out to our Club Champions.

Due to Covid-19, there was no formal meal and no Annual Fall Meeting. There was also no election for positions on our Executive. Because so many of our events were cancelled, there has been very little for the Executive to do in the 2020 season, so all current members have agreed to serve again in 2021.

We had 12 women sign up for the Single Match Play this year.

Events update - June 3

Some of you have expressed an interest in having an  opportunity to play competitive golf this season. With so many of our events cancelled, not only are we missing the camaraderie we get from  our tournaments, but also the incentive to keep our games in "competition form".

With that in mind, we have decided to run the Single Match Play if there is enough interest. If you wish to participate, please sign up on the club website. The deadline for sign up is June 10th. We will make up a draw and email a copy to all participants. Matches can begin on June 15th. As usual, it will be up to the individual players to schedule their own match and there will be a deadline for the completion of each round. You must have a valid handicap including scores from this season in order to enter.

Depending on the level of interest, we will make up either one or two divisions. The entry fee will be $5.00 to be put in our lock box with your name. The location of the lock box (since downstairs is off limits) to be announced soon.

SCHEDULE UPDATE – the interclubs in August (Hylands) and September (Sand Point) and their qualifying rounds have been cancelled.

From Jane and Deb - your Co-Captains

LADIES EVENTS update May 20

The following activities/events have been cancelled for the 2020 season:

1. Ladies' Opening Golf and Brunch

2. Annual Spring Meeting

3. Birdies, Chip Ins and Ringers

4. Anne Kolar Memorial Tournament

5. Interclubs on June 3rd (Greensmere) and July 8 (Mississippi)

6. Strawberry fest June 24

7. Women's Member Guest July 21

We have inquired about the Trafford Cup which is scheduled for Perth this year on June 17th. They have not made a decision yet on whether this will be held. Our qualifying round is scheduled for June 7. As soon as we have been advised if this is proceeding, we will let you know. If we have to field a team for this event, we will be using last year's team shirts.

Depending on circumstances, other events and qualifying rounds may have to be cancelled. We will try to keep everyone informed as the season progresses.

MOST IMPROVED GOLFER

This award, which recognizes the lady golfer with the largest decrease in handicap factor during the course of the previous season, is normally given out at the Annual Spring Meeting. We were unable to recognize the recipient because our meeting was cancelled.

Many of you will recall how we all voiced consternation through the entire 2019 season about our ever-rising handicaps due to the wet spring conditions!  Believe it or not, there were actually a few lady golfers who managed to lower their handicap.  At this time we would like to congratulate Brenda Hart for being the one who achieved the greatest decrease. Well done Brenda!

TWILIGHT LEAGUE (Convenor: Betty Manson)

We have asked the club to set aside the normal T time block for this event (4 pm to 5 pm Tuesdays), to encourage the continuation of this league. This will commence on June 9th. Each golfer is required to make their own T time on the website or by calling the Pro Shop. We will not be competing as usual, and there will be no special weekly games, dinner or cards. Keep your score for handicap purposes, enter it in the computer on the same day, but you do not have to report your score to the convenor.

DAY LADIES LEAGUE (Convenor: Pierrette Warwick)

We have asked the club to set aside the normal T time block for this event (9 am to 10:30 am), to encourage the continuation of this league. This will commence on June 4th. Pierrette will not be making the T times this year and having all the ladies arrive for 9 am. Due to Covid-19 protocol, we are asking all ladies to book their own T time on the website or call the Pro Shop, and only arrive no more than 20 minutes prior to your T time.  As with the Twilight league, there will be no competiton, weekly special games or lunch following golf. Keep your score for handicap purposes, enter it into the computer on the same day you play, but you do not need to report your score to the convenor.

If social distancing requirements change later during the golf season, we may be able to change these procedures. For the time being, we hope you are able to enjoy your golf and spend time safely with friends after so many weeks of isolation.

And one last message from Golf Canada – PLEASE remember to enter your score on the SAME DAY that you play.

The Mississippi Golf Club Ladies Section is a proud supporter of its local community businesses.  Once again we enjoyed another successful Member Guest Tournament.  On behalf of all participants, we thank you very much for your generosity in donating prizes to our event which  this year was held on Tuesday, July23; and a special thank you to our Gold sponsors, Black Tartan Kitchen and Neilcorp Homes.  FYI, in our Ladies Lounge we display a list of you, our supporters, which includes the top 10 reasons to support locally owned businesses.  This was also displayed on each table at our event.    We hope your businesses benefit and flourish from our events.  We are delighted to share with you the highlights of the day .. another terrific time of fun and laughter!

It was a beautiful warm sunny day with 93 women playing; this year’s format was a scramble.   Our dining room was tastefully decorated in our “Hats - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” theme .. with many ladies sporting their “coolest” hat.  On each table was a snack of gourmet popcorn served in a cowboy hat which was received quite well!  We also enjoyed entree choices of either Harvest Wrap (turkey, spinach, apple, cranberry, dijon sauce), Mediterranean Wrap (romaine, cucumbers, black olives, feta, greek dressing), or Grilled Chicken on a Bun, each of which included salad and dessert.    Thank you Wendy’s Kitchen and your helpful staff for a delightful meal.

There were gifts and favours for everyone, along with skill prizes for closest to the pin and longest putt on all of the par 3’s, and a raffle of “select” prizes. Our 50/50 draw was won by two lucky ladies at $130 each.  And finally was our random prize draw where every guest received one of your donations, thank you again!

Our Member Guest is not about the game; it is about the camaraderie, having much fun, with each  4-some playing in the annual event’s chosen format, all while showcasing our beautiful golf course.  So many wonderful memories for us all.  We absolutely could not have been so successful without you!

A 2019 Message from our Co-Captains...

As the winter comes to a close, we want to provide some information and updates to the members of the Ladies Section .  Some of this information has already been sent out by the Club Captain or is available in the Board Minutes.

  • The schedule for the 2019 season has been posted on the MGC web site.  If you have already copied this into your calendars please note that the date for the first Interclub is June 5 at Mississippi.  Originally the schedule listed both the first and second interclub as being held at Hylands.
  • We are looking for someone to volunteer to take over the responsibility for the Interclub this year.  This involves sending the list of qualifiers to the host club’s representative and ensuring that we have a team of 8 for each of the four interclub events.  Please let us know if you are interested.  A list of duties will be provided.
  • We are also hoping to have a volunteer to take over chip-ins and birdies
  •  Our club championships and senior club championships will be held  the same weekend as the men’s club championship , August 17, 18. The purpose of this is to highlight Club Championship Weekend.
  •  The Ladies Opening meeting and Brunch will be held Saturday, May 11.
  •  On April 27 a rules seminar will be held at the club to familiarize members with the new rules that came into effect on January 1. Perhaps those of you who have been playing all winter are already experts (though the pros seem to be having a hard time). If you go to the RCGA web site the new rules as well as explanatory videos are available. The local rules have also been updated on the MGC website.  Look under Our Course/Local rules.
  • Our member-guest will be a scramble this year
  • If there are fewer than 16 participants for the single match play, it will be played in one division
  • As determined by the OVGA course rating and work by the Handicap Committee it has been confirmed that number 10 will be a par 4.  The handicap allocations have been revised. This information will be reflected on the new cards that the club has designed and printed. For those who require an explanation of the process,  it will be explained at our opening meeting.
  • For those who have been playing golf in areas with an “active season” during our northern winter please remember that all scores are to be posted to the RCGA website. Please be sure that this is done before our opening. Active season in Ontario begins April 15 and goes until October 31.

We had great participation last year and would like to encourage everyone to take part in the many events that are offered.  Hopefully the schedule includes something for everyone.  If you need further explanation of the various events please to not hesitate to contact a member of the executive.

Your Co-captains

Trish and Jane

Check out the schedule for the upcoming season - A preliminary has been posted for all to peruse!

It is looking like we will have a rules seminar scheduled for early in the season for everyone to get aquainted with the new version of golf rules that came into effect on January 1st, 2019.

<-- As always, we will post a rule on the sidebar in the Ladies Section of our club website on the left!

July 24 - Ladies Member Guest

For more photos from the day please go to Teams and Special events

We are proud supporters of our local community businesses.  Once again our Mississippi Ladies Section enjoyed another successful Member Guest Tournament.  On behalf of all participants, our Ladies Executive thanks you very much for your generosity in donating prizes to our event which this year was held on Tuesday, July 24.  Also a big thank you to our sponsors, McAuley Financial Services and Black Tartan Kitchen.  FYI, in our Ladies Lounge we display a list of you, our supporters, which includes the top 10 reasons to support locally owned businesses.    We hope your business benefits and flourishes  from our events.  We are delighted to share with you the highlights of the day .. another terrific time of fun and laughter!

Mother Nature surprised us this year .. we expected much more rain than was anticipated (although we sure need it this Summer), but despite the gloomy forecast, 91 women participated, most sporting their country and western themed costumes, finishing 18 holes, 9 of which were “wet”.   Our dining room was tastefully decorated in a country & western theme (thank you to our creative member, Simone Foley, for her corralled farm animals which she crafted for each table).  We also enjoyed a themed meal of burgers, sausages, salad, corn on the cobb, and a delicious treat of “decorate your own sundae”.  Thank you Wendy’s Kitchen and your helpful staff for a delightful meal.

There were gifts and favours for everyone, along with skill prizes for closest to the pin and longest putt, a raffle of “select” prizes which included a gift certificate by Massage Therapy Clinic (Sylvia Giles), Pandora bracelet donated by Burns Jewellers, Chimes donated by Reid Landscaping, Sun Dog Sunglasses donated by our Men’s Night league, and a beautiful abstract art by our very own Therese Boisclair.  There was a 50/50 draw where we collected $258, half of which was won by two lucky ladies.  And finally was our random prize draw where every participant received one of your donations, thank you again!

Since so many had fun playing our Golf Bingo last year, we played the game again this year; bingo cards with a minimum straight bingo line were placed in a draw and three cards were drawn.  Each lady in the three 4-somes won a select prize.  So much fun, yet challenging to make a Bingo!!

Our Member Guest is not about the game; it is about the camaraderie, having much fun, with each  4-some playing in any format desired, all while showcasing our beautiful golf course.  So many wonderful memories for us all.  We absolutely could not have been so successful without you .. again,  our many thanks!

Best wishes,

Trish Wilson, Ladies Captain on behalf of the Mississippi  Ladies Executive (Colleen Seabrook, Judy Spencer, Trish Wilson, Barb Campbell, Jan Bryan, Therese Boisclair)

May 12, 2018 Ladies Opening

We had 60 ladies for brunch today.  The Spring meeting was conducted after the brunch.  The review of constitutional changes was postponed until a meeting at a later date.  This was done after it became evident that we weren’t going to be able to complete the review before our tee times.

The weather co-operated and the sun shone on us all day.  The format for the day was a step aside scramble which seemed to be well received by all.  55 players, thirteen foursomes and 1 threesome played 18 holes and prizes were awarded to all teams.  Two teams tied for first at a score of 69.

Joanne Kolar, Chloe Wilson, Lori Van Dusan, Terri Bootsma

Carolyn Renwick, Barb Campbell, Marilyn Peters , Joanne Palmer

We had 4 closest to the pin prizes donated by Dan Kolar.  Winners were: #2 Colleen Seabrook, #5 Simone Foley, #13 Jennifer Hicks, #16Sue Wimperis

Ladies Member-Guest July 25th

Our Ladies Member Guest was held  Tuesday, July 25, 2017. We are very excited to share with you the highlights of such a successful event. It was a day of fun and laughter enjoyed by 74 women .. we can't wait until next year to do it all over again!!

First of all, what beautiful weather! Mother Nature was truly good to us.  Despite the fact that no carts were permitted on the course due to heavy rain on Monday, 70 women were able to come out and walk 18 holes. The few who were unable to play, came to enjoy the fun in our tastefully decorated Canada 150-themed dining room, along with a delicious meal, give-away prizes for each guest  and our random prize draw.

For skill prizes, we awarded a prize each to two women for the longest putt on two holes. To make it fun winning additional prizes, each 4-some played Golf Bingo out on the course; cards with a minimum straight bingo line were placed in a draw and three cards were drawn.  Each lady in the three 4-somes won a select prize.  So much fun, with plenty of trouble to be had playing that game!! Our random draw prizes were also a huge hit with our guests … a prize for everyone! Thanks to our sponsors and numerous donations, we had enough prizes to award to both members and our guests.  We were also able to award to two lucky women $100 each in our 50/50 draw.  FYI, in addition to the  sponsor/donation posters on display in our clubhouse,  at each dinner table was a list of you, our supporters, which included the top 10 reasons to support locally owned businesses.    We are very happy to report that many of our members and guests were eager to learn more about our local businesses and look forward to visiting and supporting you in the near future.

Our Member Guest is not about the game; it is about the camaraderie, having much fun, with each  4-some playing in any format desired, all while showcasing our beautiful golf course.  Such wonderful memories for us all.  We absolutely could not have been so successful without our donors again,  our many thanks!

Women's Intersectionals July 16th

Mississippi Women's Intersectional team places 3rd in Division C on Sunday July 16th at the Ottawa Hunt.  The Hunt club played strong on home turf ending the day with 38 points followed by Hautes Plaines with 25 points, Mississippi with 11 and Kanata with 10.  Next year Mississippi will remain in Division C playing against Hautes Plaines, Greyhawk and Sandpoint on the Hautes Plaines course.

Trafford Cup June 21st @ Perth

Mississippi Ladies were victorious over Smiths Falls and Perth the host club at the Annual Trafford Cup tri-team golf tournament. Mississippi's Carolyn Renwick was the low gross for the day and Cathy Draper was low net.  More on the results to follow....

Annual Strawberryfest and Ladies Invitational June 21st

A total of 44 women enjoyed a wonderful day on the golf course at the Mississippi Annual Strawberry Fest held on Wednesday, June 21.  It was an exciting finish as at the end of regular play Terri DeLuis of Brockville and Chantale Belley of Hylands were both tied for the low score of the day with a 79.  After a two hole sudden death playoff Chantale Belley emerged as the winner of the day.  Teri DeLuis ended up being the low net of the day in the A Class division.

In our B Class division Lori Ridgeway from the Carleton Golf & Yacht club won low gross with a score of 94.  Our B Class low net winner was Debi Pye from the Equinelle Golf Club with a net score of 75.

In our C Class division Cathy Besharan of the Canadian Golf Club won the low gross with a score of 102.  Our C Class low net winner was Marsha Wright of the Amberwood Golf Club with a net score of 71.

It is interesting to note that we had a closest to the pin category in each class and in the A and B Classes no one landed a ball on the green so a draw with all the names of the A players and another draw with all the names of the B players were entered into a hat and winners were drawn to determine a winner in each class.  Our C Class did hit their green and was won by Roberta Tarte of Amberwood.

Longest drive in A class was Teri DeLuis, in B Class Carol Bream from Rivermead, in C Class Marie Williams from Rockland.

Longest putt any class was won by Joanne Milligan of Amberwood.

A wonderful luncheon was provided by Wendy and enjoyed by all.

Many comments were received on what great shape our course was in and so enjoyable to play.

Many thanks go out to Adele Gosbee and Judy Spencer for being the organizers of this tournament.  Also many thanks to our sponsers Barb Cambell, Josee Biggs, and Sylvia Giles for without them this tournament would not be as successful as it was.  A big thank you also goes out to all the volunteers that contributed to making the day a great success - Don Green & Trevor Gosbee - loading up the carts with bags, Cathy Rose & Cam McKinnon for doing the registration, Don Green and Colleen Seabrook for doing the starting, Sandy Iwaniw and Cam McKinnon for doing the scoring, Barb Campbell & Jan Bryan for table decorations and room décor, Gayle Stanley for prizes, and our pro shop for doing the cart setups for us.  Also big kudos to Bill Hudson and his staff for such a great course.

Single Match play qualifying was also played.  The winners in the A and B Divisions from last year automatically got a bye into the matches.  Nedda Munro in the A Division and Cathy Draper in the B Division.  The seven winners in the A division are Cathy Rose, Trish Wilson, Carolyn Renwick, Brenda Hart, Sandra Blaikie, Colleen Seabrook and Lila James.  The seven winners in the B division are Donna Specht, Sandy Iwaniw, Jane France, Judy Hunter, Suzanne Maheral, Therese Boisclair and Josee Biggs.  Good luck to all participants in their matches.

Ladies Opening and brunch well attended!

We had a total of 62 signed up - 59 to play golf and 3 for brunch only.   The most attended opening in a number of year.  The brunch was well received by all the ladies and the Spring Meeting was conducted during the brunch and all wrapped up in plenty of time for the golf.  It was an overcast day with some scattered showers but we were lucky enough to have 39 of our 59 ladies brave the wind and rain to play and we ended up with 11 teams.  We played 9 holes and prizes were awarded for the front nine and the back nine.  First place for the front nine were Lila James, Sue Kolar and Sandy Iwaniw.  First place for the back nine were Gay Wilson, Sandy Geren, Simone Foley and Joanne Kolar.  Prizes were awarded to all the participating teams.  We had 4 closest to the hole prizes - two donated by Barb Campbell and two bought with the entry fee money.  Winners were #4 - Lila James, #7 - Sandy Iwaniw, #11 - Marsha Woodgate and #14 - Rita Mathews.

It was noted that many of the ladies were impressed with the idea of a brunch instead of a supper and suggestions were made to do the same for the ladies closing.  The brunch was very tasty and there was lots of food for all.

Plenty of geese on the back nine today—we were wondering where the course dog was, then he showed up just after we were through the 17th—never seen the geese get in the water that fast!  Did feel sorry for the poor guy whom I had hit with my second shot- what a traumatic day for him!

Golf result was a three way tie of 72 by Sandy Green, Pierette Warwick and Dianne Illingworth

The $26 50/50 was won—for a second week in a row!!—By Marion Linda.  She was off to buy a lottery ticket on the way home.

Day Ladies Report - August 8th

Day Ladies Report - August 1st

Beautiful weather for golf.  We were greeted by the lovely sight on the first hole of the fountains running in the pond.  That may also explain in my foursome why three out of four balls went in the water that hole!

No games—just golf.

Doris O’Connor came first with a 66, Nedda Munro came second with a 72 and Trish Wilson came third with a 75.

The $31.50 50/50 was won by Sandy Geren.

Day Ladies Report - July 11th….8am shot gun

Only 13 golfers today— a record 17 cancelled! Not sure —was it the early start or the humid weather??

It was hot but the sun stayed behind clouds which made it quite bearable.

Our game was even numbered holes.  The winner was (again) Betty Manson (again) a 35 net.  This time she was tied by both Nedda Munro and Danielle Hopps!

To the disappointment of the many men who bought tickets, Iris Boles won the $26 50/50.  If anyone is looking for change—Iris has a pile of toonies!

Day Ladies Report - July 4….dog days of summer come early!

Today was hot and very humid which turned out to be too daunting for the 12 golfers who cancelled.

Of the 20 that showed up, most managed 18 holes.  There was a big boost in cart rentals—only two of us were brave (or is that foolish?) enough to walk the round!!

Besides the heat, some could blame missed golf shots on a new major enemy out there—dive bombing deer flies that just won’t quit!!

Our game was golf, pure and simple.  The winner was Betty Manson at 71 followed by another tie this week— Marion Linka and Sadie Mullens at 72.

Sally Gadd won the $22 50/50.

Day Ladies Report - June27….sunbrella time!!

Well what a difference a week makes—today was hot and sunny with a lovely breeze—a little humid but at least it wasn’t falling in drops!

And the good weather meant we were back to full rounds of 18 holes!

28 golfers entered today’s game which was count your putts (sadly we also counted the other strokes…) The winner was Sue Trounce who managed to limit her putts to 30 for the round, followed by the two Janes (France and Hart) who decided if they had the same name they may as well have the same score—31 putts for the round!

The $28.50 50/50 was won by Cam McKinnon.

Since July 11th is the Mens’ Member Guest event, it was decided that we would go ahead with an 8am Day Ladies shotgun start on that day.

June 20th…..out came the umbrellas again and it wasn’t for sun!

This will be short—-just like our golf games yesterday!

Of the 20 stalwart golfers that showed up, all hit the links but some quit after six holes and the rest of us only managed nine.  It wasn’t dangerous (no thunder), but who wants to golf in rain that won’t quit?

The early finish led to substantial confusion in the clubhouse; i.e. were we ordering breakfast, brunch or an early lunch?  And Dave was no doubt disappointed by the number of coffee cups that replaced wine glasses…

Terry Bootsma won the 50/50— worth $23.

Top three golfers were #1 Jane France with a net of 32.5, #2 Sally Gadd with a net 33.5 and #3 Sue Turner with net 35.  Those ladies not only played in the rain, they actually managed to play well in the rain!

On a positive note the course is starting to look really good— I saw a huge improvement after being away two weeks. And we can always hope for drier weather next week….

JUNE 13, 2019

Today, rain was in the forecast to start around 4pm.  However, the weather man was wrong.  We only played nine holes and the rain started.  The game today was just golf and the winners were:  Lillian Wagner with a net 34.5; Iris Boles with a net 35 and Marsha Woodgate with a net 36.  The 50/50 winner of 23.50 was Anne Marleau.

June 6, 2019

It was a good day for golf - no rain and not too cold for a change.  The game today was par3's. The winners were Doris O'Connor, Colleen Seabrook and Sandy Geren who all tied with a 13 total. The pace of play was a bit better today. Let's hope it keeps up.

The winner of the 50/50 for 33.50 was Betty Manson. Audrey and Marie Kolar were present for lunch and as always supported our 50/50.

Day Ladies Report - May 30th…..some big numbers today (maybe we needed more mimosas)!

Day #2 saw another great turnout of 33 golfers who showed up to brave the early morning chilly winds. The weather did warm up - a bit - but wind remained a factor.  With any luck it will help dry up those fairways that are still soggy. Another benefit was fewer bugs!

The slow play was better, but there is definitely still room for improvement.  Remember there is a 10 stroke maximum in this league. Another suggestion is to let the group behind you hit off the #5 tee while you are trekking around the covered bridge detour. (Of course that only works if the group behind you is fast enough to arrive at the tee before you leave!)

The 50/50 was won by Gerry Houston - $33. Marsha had offered to help out splitting the 50/50 money which proved to be quite a complex task as stragglers bought the final tickets! No doubt it got easier the third time through…

Net golf winners this week were Cindy Coleman with a 69 and Shirley Woolsey and Jeanette Mulcahy tied for second with a 75.

See you in a couple of weeks - meanwhile I am off to tackle the Scottish links!!

May 23rd….maybe it was the mimosas….

Our delayed opening day saw a great turn out of 36 golfers, most of whom were just happy to be finally playing.  A warm welcome to new club members Patti, Marilyn and Danielle and to new Day Ladies Trish, Nedda, Cindy and Jane.

Each golfer was greeted with a smile and a mimosa drink as they set out to tackle Hole #1. Despite the forecast, most golfers managed to avoid getting wet.  Key lesson learned was to stay out of the rough which is extra dense and challenging this year. The winter kill still covering a number of the fairways did mean less “happy grass”, but it also gave a longer roll than usual!

Important to commit to playing ready golf and being as speedy as possible—-slow play today caused significant frustration for many of the players!!  That’s really not fair to the group.  As a (very) high handicap player myself, I know it’s possible to take your shots and keep moving.  If you can’t do that then be prepared to pick up your ball.

Sue Armour won $27.50 in the 50/50.

The net golf winners today were Carolyn Wright with a 65, Patti Keeble with a 67 and Sandy Green with a 70.

See you next week!

July 26, 2018

Hard to believe, but today, because of the high humidity, it felt as if we were golfing in sauna.  Also, because of the heavy overnight rainfall, no carts were allowed.  There were 26 ladies who had signed-up for golf this morning. Nine ladies cancelled.  Some ladies quit after 9 holes, some after 14 and only 8 ladies continued and finished 18 holes.  We are all hoping that next Thursday is not so hot and humid.  The game today was just golf, and the winners were: Jane France with a net 75; Jo Anne Mullin and Jan Bryan with a net 76.  The 50/50 winner of $15.00 was Jo Anne Mullin.

Today was the hottest Thursday ever.  The temperature reached a high of 35 degrees. Half of the ladies who had signed up cancelled, the other half all rode carts with the exception of Nancy Stewart.  Some only played nine holes.  Many ladies came into the club house overheated.  All they wanted was a drink and were not hungry for lunch.  However, we made it.  The game today was tees that started with the letter F or T and the winners were:  Heather Leech with a net 33.5; Marion Linka with a net 36.5; and Doris O’Connor with a net 37.  The winner of the 50/50 worth $17.00 was Pierrette Warwick.  Pierrette donated her winnings to the day ladies.

June 7, 2018

Good day for golf, not too hot and no rain.  Today the game was just golf.  Hopefully, next week the construction of the water system will come to an end and we can play a special game.  Chris Kempster, our bartender left $10.00 with the ladies in order to purchase 50/50 tickets when he has a day off on Thursdays.  Thank you Chris.  A beautiful day for golf, and today the game was just golf.  The winners were: Marsha Woodgate with a net 70; Colleen Seabrook and Sue Trounce both with a net 74.  It was decided that the game would be just golf until the work for the water system is all finished, then we would play games such as par 3s etc.  The 50/50 winner of the $34.00 was our bartender Chris Kempster.  And again, as well as last year, Chris donated his winnings to the day ladies.  Thank you Chris, the ladies appreciate it.

July 27, 2017

The game today was just golf, and there is never a dull moment on Thursdays.  Doris O’Connor and Donna Specht tied with a net 75.  Six other ladies tied with a net 76.  And since it probably would have taken a half hour to find a winner using the method of aggregate score for the best nine holes, then the best last six, etc. it was decided that the two ladies who tied would share the total prize money allowed between them.   The winner of the 50/50 draw of $19.50 was Marion Linka.

 July 20, 2017

A very hot day for golf -- most of the ladies opted to cart instead of walk, which turned out to be a very good decision.  Greeting cards for June Timmons and Sharon Minter were signed by all the ladies present.  Marie Kolar and Audrey Kolar joined us for lunch. Today the game was hidden partners and the winners were: Betty Manson and Donna DiSabato with a net 147; Jane France and Pierrette Warwick with a net 148.  The 50/50 winner of $19.50 was Mitzi Wigglesworth.

July 13, 2017

Take a look at the ladies group in PINK!!

Day ladies pink group

 July 6, 2017

Today the game was played from the forward (red) tees.  Some ladies loved it, some not so much.  Sharon Minter who is going through cancer treatment joined us for lunch,  as well as Marie Kolar.  It was great to see Sharon and seeing how well she is coping with her illness.  Also, Helen Spearman had a spectacular birdie on the 18th hole.   She was lying two in the back of the sand bunker and she sunk it for chip in birdie.  Too bad we didn’t capture it on film. The winners were; Sandy Geren with a net 68; and Iris Boles and Betty Manson tied with a net 69.  The 50/50 winner of $21.50 was Mitzi Wigglesworth.

June 29, 2017

Rain out.

June 22, 2017

Another nice day for golf, and today the Strawberry Fest ladies left some goodies for the day ladies to enjoy --muffins etc.  Thanks to the organisers of the Strawberry Fest, it was a good way to start off.  Today the game was just golf and the winners were:  Iris Boles with a net 67; Lillian Wagner with a net 69 and Joanne Mullin with a net 70.  The 50/50 winner of $21.00 was Therese Boisclair.

June 15, 2017

It was a beautiful sunny day for golf. There was a little bit of adventure today – Enid was locked in the back seat of the car and was hoping that someone would miss her before her tee time came up.  We had a good laugh and will make sure that she is out of the car before locking all the doors.  Also Audrey Kolar and Marie Kolar joined the ladies for lunch.  Today the game was just golf and the winners were:  Sally Gadd with a net 69; Doreen McGibbon with a net 70 and Jane France with a net of 71.  The 50/50 winner of $23.50 was Pauline Walker.

June 8, 2017

 Cancelled

June 1, 2017

Another nasty day on the links, it was a cool, cloudy and windy day.  About half of the ladies quit after nine holes and the rest of brave souls continued and finished 18 holes.  Today the game was putts and the winners were:  Dianne Illingworth and Sally Gadd tied with 31 putts; Pauline Walker came in second place with 32 putts.  The 50/50 winner of $14.00 was Doris O’Conner.

May 25, 2017

The weather man’s call for rain scared away some of the ladies today.  However, the rain held out and we were able to play 18 holes.  The game today was just golf and the winners were: Jane France with a net 73; Doris O’Connor with a net 76 and Enid Xhignesse with a net 77.  The 50/50 winner of $15.00 was Shirley Woolsey.

May 18, 2017

Today was a very HOT day with a strong wind and the ladies had a little help at the starting tee with a mimosa cocktail which was very much appreciated.  The game was just gold and the winners were: Jeanette Mulcahy with a net score of 70; Sally Gadd with a net of 72; Marscha Woodgate and Mitzi Wigglesworth tied with a net 74.  The 50/50 draw of $20.00 was Iris Boles.

MAY 11, 2017

Opening day. Welcome to all the ladies to season 2017.  Because the course was very wet we only played nine holes and since most of the ladies could not remember what their handicaps were we did not have any winners.  The 50/50 draw of $22.50 was won by Sally Gadd.

AUGUST 11, 2016

Another very hot day on the links and only 16 ladies were brave enough to come out to play.  However, all 16 ladies were smart and decided to ride carts.  The game was just golf and three ladies tied with a net 71 -- Marsha Woodgate, Betty Manson and Marion Linka.  The 50/50 winner of $16.00 was Therese Boisclair.

AUGUST 4, 2016

It was very hot today -- especially if you see Enid Xhignesse ridding in a cart.  However, she was not the only one to do so many ladies chose to take a cart. One lady had to quit after nine holes finding it to warm.  Brenda Burroughs pulled a hamstring – hope she will get well soon.  The game was even holes and the winners were: Lillian Wagner with a net 31; Betty Manson with a net 35 and Mary Gemmel with a net of 36.  The 50/50 winner of $23.50 was Pierrette Warwick.

JULY 28, 2016

Today we tried very hard to beat the pro, however only two ladies managed to do it.  Terry Kolar shot a gross 71, Jane France and Marsha Woodgate came in with a 67 and 69 net.  We just have to try harder next year.   The 50/50 winner of $17.00 was Doris O’Connor.

JULY 14, 2016

Another very warm day for golf, but it did not discourage the ladies one bit.  We had a record breaking attendance for a regular Thursday morning – 29 ladies showed-up to play golf.  The game today was just golf and the winners were: Mary-Ann Reddick with a net 68; Iris Boles with a net 69; and Pauline Walker with a net 70.  The 50/50 winner of $24.50 was Pauline Walker.  Next Thursday we are going to beat the pro.  It should be fun.

JULY 14, 2016

Today the weather man called for a possibility of rain, and only 16 ladies were brave enough to show up for golf.  Some of us were able to get nine holes in before the rain started.  However the last group was not able to get nine holes in and only played seven holes.  How do we determine the winners???  It was suggested that the names of all the ladies who showed up to play be put in a bag and that three names be drawn.  It was accepted and the three names drawn were:  Sally Gadd; Betty Manson and Pierrette Warwick.  The 50/50 winner of $16.50 was sally Gadd.

JULY 7, 2016

A very hot day today, many ladies opted for carts because the thermometer reached 32 degrees.  You know it’s a warm day when Enid Xhignesse is riding in a cart. Today the game was count your one putts.  The winners were:  Sally Gadd and Josie Biggs with 8 one putts; and Sandy Geren and Betty Manson with 7 one putts.  The winner of the 50/50 draw of $23.00 was Jeannette Mulcahy.  Marie  and Audrey Kolar joined the ladies for lunch.

JUNE 30, 2016

2023 Senior Intersectional Team

We hosted the OVGA Senior Intersectionals on September 5th with the visiting teams from Kanata Lakes, Greensmere, and Carleton Golf and Yacht Club.  The weather was exceptionally hot but the ladies were real troopers

The team from Greensmere were the winners with 25 points, 2nd place went to Carleton Golf and Yacht Club with 23 points, Mississippi was just 1 point behind Carleton with 22 points, and Kanata played hard to get 14 points.

This means that Greensmere will go up into the C Division, Carleton will be our host next year, and Kanata will drop down into the E Division.

Well Done to our team – we don’t move to a different Division and we don’t have to be the host again!

Colleen Seabrook was able to get all 6 points in her match – Congratulations!

Our Senior Intersectionals Team was:

Trish Wilson – alternate         Lila James

Leah MacMillan                      Gay Wilson

Colleen Seabrook                   Lynn Kolar

Sr. Women’s Intersectionals

L-R: Lila James, Laurel Onfrichuck, Trish Wilson, Leah MacMillan, Carolyn Renwick, Nedda Munro, Deb Wallingford, Susan Wimperis.

2019 Ladies Member-Guest

Best wishes and our sincere thanks for your continued support,

Mississippi  Ladies Executive: Colleen Seabrook, Judy Spencer, Trish Wilson, Jane France, Adele Gosbee, Jan Bryan, and Therese Boisclair

2017 Member Guest

On behalf of the Mississippi Golf Club Ladies Section and our guests, we wish to thank all our sponsors so very much for their generous support in sponsoring and donating prizes to our Ladies Member Guest held  Tuesday, July 25, 2017.

FYI, in addition to the  sponsor/donation posters on display in our clubhouse,  at each dinner table was a list our supporters, which included the top 10 reasons to support locally owned businesses.    We werevery happy to report that many of our members and guests were eager to learn more about our local businesses and look forward to visiting and supporting them in the near future.

Our Member Guest is not about the game; it is about the camaraderie, having much fun, with each  4-some playing in any format desired, all while showcasing our beautiful golf course.  Such wonderful memories for us all.  We absolutely could not have been so successful without you .. again,  our many thanks!

2016 Member Guest

On Tuesday, July 26th the Mississippi Golf Club hosted our annual Ladies Member Guest with the theme for the day Pink & Purple.  It was a sunny warm day with 80 colourful ladies in the field dressed in their pink & purple outfits.  I would personally like to thank the ladies executive for all their hard work in making this tournament a wonderful success - Kim Ridpath our President for securing us a sponsor for this event - McAuley Financial Services (Angela Houle), Simone Foley, House, for her wonderful table decorations and organizing the great meal that everyone raved about, Brenda Hart our Vice President, for making up the table favours, Barb Cambell our Secretary for doing all the prizes, Jan Bryan our Treasurer who managed to collect all the entry fees except one before the event.  I would also like to thank everyone who donated prizes to our tournament - Sandy Geren, Barb Campbell, Cam McKinnon, Don Green, Dan Kolar, The Mississippi Golf Club, Betty Manson, Diane Hunter Trafford, Simone Foley and Marilyn O'Connell.  A special thank you to Cathy Draper for checking in all the players and handing out snacks and water.  I've attached a few pictures of the day.  Also thanks to all the members who brought guests to make this such a successful event.  Rumor has it that everyone had a great time and are looking forward to next year's member guest.
